Clinic of Neurology and Psychiatry for Children and Youth in Belgrade, Serbia Accredited by ADC Program

Clinic of neurology and psychiatry for children and youth in Belgrade, Serbia has been granted the title of Accredited Duchenne Center for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The neuromuscular team, led by doctor Ana Kosac as the pediatric neurologist, showed they provide multidisciplinary care according to the latest care recommendations and state that during this process they gained fresh knowledge and a greater understanding of what they do, as well as ideas for improving DMD patient monitoring smartly and practically.

Multidisciplinary care is provided in collaboration with pediatricians, subspecialists from the University Children’s Hospital in Belgrade.

The ADC committee visiting this center was led by prof. Imelda de Groot, the program leader, prof. Susan Apkon, the Advisory Board care expert, and Francoise Salama, experienced patient expert.

The idea that the center should apply for accreditation came from Serbian patient organization, DMD Serbia, who approached dr. Kosac and encouraged the team to go through this process and also helped with gathering important feedback on care provided from patients followed by this center.

Achieving the accreditation status can help patients feel confident about care provided in their center. In the words of dr. Kosac the team is „incredibly honored to be recognized as an Accredited Duchenne Center“ and she views „the impact of this recognition as immeasurable, not only for the team, but also for the families and boys with DMD.“

According to prof. de Groot the neuromuscular team in Belgrade also works very closely with the primary centers regionally and the center’s close connection to psychologists and psychiatrists in the hospital provides additional benefit of available psychological support.

We are delighted to welcome another excellent center among Accredited Duchenne Centers.
